BRIEF PROFILE OF UNILAG
The University of Lagos was founded in 1962 with three faculties: (1) Commerce and Business Administration (later renamed Faculty of Business and Social Studies), (2) Law and (3) Medicine. The Faculties of Arts, Education, Engineering and Science were added in 1964.
At inception, the University was empowered to produce a professional workforce that would steer the political, social and economic development of the then newly independent country.  Over the last five decades, the University has pursued this mission with vigour, excellence and panache as it has provided qualitative and research-oriented education to Nigerians and all those who have entered its domain in search of knowledge. Today, University of Lagos has a legacy of academic excellence which our matriculating students will tremendously benefit from. Today, University of Lagos, apart of thousands of Captains of Industry, can boast of the Vice-President of the nation along with four serving Governors and a Deputy Governor as part of its alumni.
FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY
As part of efforts to ensure an excellent teaching, learning and research environment, the University has over the years, acquired and maintained various facilities, not just in terms of physical structures but also viable platforms and avenues for overall development of our students to be independent individuals capable of contributing their quota to the development of this great nation.
Already, the University is upgrading and equipping classrooms, lecture theaters, and laboratories with modern teaching facilities that compare favorably with those in any universities world-wide.
The University regularly sponsors deserving students to participate in national and international academic competitions, seminars and workshops among others.  In the last one year, students from Geosciences Department, Faculty of Science won two intervarsity quiz competitions between Nigerian Geosciences Departments for 2015, that is, The American Association of Petroleum Geologist/Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists Intervarsity Competition hosted at the University of Ibadan on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 and The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society intervarsity quiz competition hosted by the University of Ilorin in May, 2015.
UNILAG also approved the participation of Mr. Ogundare, Gbayode (Faculty of Engineering) and Miss Ola Mojoyinola Joanna (Faculty of Science) in the 6thUniversity Scholars Leadership Symposium which took place from August 1 to 7, 2015in Hong Kong with the theme: Enrich, Educate & Enlighten.
Among other events, the University holds an Annual Debate to groom our students for public-speaking. Winners of the debate receive incentives and academic materials (laptop) and opportunities to represent the University at national and international debates (fully sponsored).
As you had been informed in the course of the week, the university has a Sports Center which is free for use by bonafide students. You should take advantage of the facilities at the Sports center to keep fit always. Remember a sound body bequeaths a sound mind.
Also in line with the needs of the Nigerian Nation, as directed by the Federal Government, an Entrepreneurial and Skills Development Center has been established to:
a.     Assist with acquisition of some specialized skills that can make you job ready for the economy upon graduation and
b.    Enable entrepreneurial development for those that are identified to possess entrepreneurial traits.
This is in addition to the general exposure of all students to entrepreneurship through the compulsory Entrepreneurship courses all of you have to take. Do take full advantage of this opportunity. The Work Study Unit of the Student Affairs Division also ensures that interested students are able to combine their rigorous studies with work anytime during the free period in their lecture time tables to augment their financial resources.
TO OUR MATRICULATING STUDENTS
My dear students, gaining admission into the over 52-year old UNILAG is not only noble but also glorious. Completing the matriculation process is not the end of your journey to obtain tertiary education,  it is just the first step of a journey that will determine your future. It, therefore, requires determination, diligence, focus and resilience. You must show the zeal to acquire academic excellence for which this University is reputed. Shun cultism, drug abuse, indecent and immoral behavior and other vices that mar or abruptly end your sojourn here.  The University has zero-tolerance for all forms of misconduct and misbehavior.
HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION
All of have been allocated into Halls of Residence; while not all have bedspaces in the Halls of Residence. Hostel accommodation is easily the biggest problem the University is currently facing. As at today we have only about 8, 000 bedspaces for over 32,000 full time students. Efforts are being made to increase this. Additional 1,000 bedspaces are being added with the ongoing construction at El-Kanemi while the University is exploring BOT arrangements for additional 5,000 bedspaces. You just have to bear with us in the mean time.  I want to implore you all to partake in the activities of the hall you belong to, whether you have bedspaces currently or not. I also want to charge Hall executives and administration to allow other members of their halls not resident to be part of the hall activities. This will allow your belonging. It is hoped that at one time or the other during your studentship you would be able to get access to a bedspace in your hall.
CONCLUSION
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I seize the opportunity provided by this Matriculation Ceremony to urge you all to join forces with us at the University in its march to be a top class Institution for the pursuit of excellence in knowledge, character and service to humanity.
Once again, I congratulate and wish our new students a successful academic pursuit in the University of Lagos. I thank you all for your kind attention.

Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng
Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Nigeria.
